The topic that we chose is “Rosie The Riveter: The Rights and Responsibilities of Women in WW II.” Our project is about American women joining the workforce during WW II while the men were off at war. We found many good topics, but the topic of Rosie the Riveter interested us the most. We also found it easy to relate to this topic because women joining the workforce in WWII still has an impact on people today.
For our project, we used websites and other online articles as secondary sources. The first websites we found we used as background information on the topic so we knew what parts of Rosie the Riveter that we wanted to research and learn more about. As our secondary research continued, we dug deeper and included books in our research. The information we found from our secondary sources helped us determine what primary sources we wanted to use.
Our primary sources included interviews, quotes, videos, and newspapers. For local History Day competition, we had one interview. For districts, we included two more interviews. These interviews were from two women who experienced World War II. They told us what it was like to live back then and how Rosie the Riveter affected them. Newspapers from our primary research included information about what women did for jobs, what the impact of women working in the workforce was and other historical context. Videos included interviews, propaganda, and other historical context. Primary sources helped strengthen our project.
We created a website for our project because it was a way to present our information with modern-day technology. We wanted to learn how to add different elements to the website to enhance our project. Also, we found a lot of videos on our topic that we wanted to incorporate into our project. An example of a problem that we had was that we found video interviews that we wanted in our project, but we could not download the interviews. Instead of having the videos, we decided to use pictures of the women that were interviewed and include audio from the interviews.
Women joining the workforce in WW II relates well to this year’s theme of “Rights and Responsibilities in History.” This topic relates to the theme because American women in WW II gained the responsibilities of the men’s jobs when the men went off to war. By gaining these responsibilities the women also gained some rights. After all of these women joined the workforce, the women proved that they could be in the workforce. By proving this, women started to be seen as equals to men. From this women gained more trust and rights. The topic’s impact on history is that there are millions of women today who are in the workforce doing important jobs.
