It became common during World War Two to see women in pants at the work site and to and from work. Propaganda through the 1940’s proved how important women working would help with the war effort (Brothers). Soldiers returning from the war wanted their jobs back, and some of the women didn't want to give up theirs (Holmes). Some places and companies were forced to lay off the women workers (Coleman). In later years, Rosie also became an iconic American image in the fight to broaden women’s civil rights (“Rosie the Riveter”). In the late 1940’s, women were starting to get into politics (Heinemann). Rosie the Riveter probably led to the end of "stay at home" mothers.
